Mary Savina, Professor of Geology and Co-Director of Archaeology at Carleton College, will outline the geology of Rice County on Thursday, November 16, at 7 pm, at the Rice County Historical Society, located at 1914 NW Second Ave, Faribault, MN.

Rice County has it all – geologically, speaking.  Not only do we have marine sedimentary rocks from the Ordovician period (450 million years ago, more or less) exposed in eastern Rice County, but the glaciers have delivered us a representative cross-section of all the igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks that are otherwise exposed only in areas to our north.  Minnesota’s oldest rocks are more than 3.5 billion years old – the oldest in the U.S. – and our youngest “rocks” are forming right now.  Savina, will have maps and samples in hand as she outlines the geology and discusses how the geology affects vegetation, landscape, and water in Rice County.

The cost for this event is free for members and $2 for nonmembers. Parking for this event is free.
