“Drop Spindle Spinning”

On Thursday, February 9, beginning at 6 p.m., the Rice County Historical Society will host a program on spinning using a Drop Spindle presented by Arlene Roberts.

Spinning yarn from wool is an ancient textile art. Today we think of spinning as something that can only be done with a large and expensive spinning wheel. But for thousands of years, fiber was spun by hand using the simple tool of a drop spindle. A drop spindle looks like a long top and, as it spins, the rotation and gravity pulls the wool, twisting the fiber into yarn. This is an easy and approachable way to learn how to spin. Arlene will also have a spinning wheel that she will demonstrate that night.

The cost of the event is $10.00. Class size is limited to 12 participants. Each attendee will go home with some wool and a their own drop spindle. Pre-registration is required.
